âMay I cut in, sir?â
Papi smiles and nods, squeezing my hand as he walks off, smirking to himself over the polite interruption from the handsome stranger in the dashing suit who came bouncing up the road in the spray-painted flower power caravan.
âI thought you had to play all night.â I smile sadly, my hands intertwining with his.
His hands are warm and weary from playing guitar most of the night and they slip into mine like they were made just for me. The pulse of his heart against my own in a music that serves to keep time to these brief moments.
The ones Iâll miss so much.
Jackâs fingers find my pulse point on my wrist and he smiles in familiarity as his eyes gleam wickedly. He has plans for me. Iâm sure more than half would make me blush scarlet and forget myself and Iâm dying to hear themâ¦but for one thing.
One major thing.
One bump that now stands between us.
âHad to sneak away to dance with my girl.â
His girl.
I am his.
For a little while longer.
For a moment, just a moment, I slip into the role I was meant to play.
His Eddie.
The song changes to a slow one. Half the people leave the dance floor to make room for those too in love to care, those too tired to leave it and those too inebriated to realize who theyâre even dancing with.
I slip into a slow sway because I know my partner well.
I know his hands, rough and warm and large as they are, traveling around my waist to the small of my back just like they have so many times before.
Drawing me to him.
I know his index fingers are trying to find the little dimples in my hips where heâs grabbed me.
In love.
In lust.
In perpetual adoration.
I wrap my arms around his neck and hold him there, as he gathers one of my hands in his own and moves his shoulders to shelter me from the prying eyes of anyone else as we sway together in a circle in the middle of the dance floor.
The sound of echoing voices and water trickling softly fills the air along with a slowly playing electric guitar as I recognize the song as âThe Night We Metâ by Lord Huron.
I let the lyrics fill my head as Jackâs tender spirit fills my soul with the only true love Iâve ever known.
Iâd ever know.
To love him is a privilege.
I hold on to him tighter and listen to the sound of his breathing as I lay my head to his chest.
This is going to be the hardest thing Iâll ever do.
Jack sways to the right and then takes me around in a slow, steady waltz. I know people are looking, but Iâm only looking at him. Iâm only staring up into eyes of blue that are the best color Iâve ever seen.
As he presses his lips to my forehead, everything is all right. I am lost in the embrace of my lover, my best friend, my champion. I can smell the deep cedar and dark chocolate spice of him mixed with the sweet smell of his breath.
